FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 7 at The Wagner Free Institute of Science

10:00am – 12:00pm: The Buzz About Bees
A lesson about bees geared towards home-school children with open hive demonstrations, honey extractions, scavenger hunts, and hands-on activities, including seed bomb making with local artist Aaron Birk. 12:00pm – 2:30pm: Festivities in the museum & garden
Join us for honey tastings, honey comb ice cream samples from The Franklin Fountain,  prizes, Bees-in-the-Hive game, and hands-on activities, including wax candle making.

2:30pm – 4:00pm: Beekeeping 101
by Suzanne Matlock, Vice President of the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild
Are you interested in urban beekeeping? This workshop will cover beekeeping basics, building upon last year’s lesson, and includes open hive demonstrations.

4:00pm – 5:00pm: Art & Author Talk
supported by the North Philadelphia Arts and Cultural Alliance
Local beekeeper Jim Bobb, who collaborated with artist Hilary Berseth to create a honeycomb sculpture on display at Temple Contemporary in the Tyler School of Art, will discuss public observation hives, live bee art, and beeswax sculptures and local artist and author Aaron Birk will discuss his recently published graphic novel The Pollinator’s Corridor, which he will gladly sign for you following the talk.

5:00pm to 6:00pm: Honey Happy Hour (ages 21+)
$5-$10 suggested donation
Back by popular demand! Join us for a free sampling of mead from Stonekeep Meadery and beer made with honey from Barry’s Home Brew Outlet, Prism Brewing Company, and Earth Bread + Brewery! The Franklin Fountain will hand out samples of their honey comb ice cream and you can enter a prize drawing for local honey, beeswax soaps, products from Whole Foods Market, and a gift certificate to Triumph Brewing Company.

We will also toast Joseph Leidy for his birthday!

The Honey Happy hour is possible through generous donations by Prism Brewery, Barry’s Home Brew and Stonekeep Meadery, Earth Bread + Brewery, Whole Foods Market, Triumph Brewing Co., and The Franklin Fountain.
