On Friday, September 9th Glen Foerd on the Delaware will be hosting Honey Happy Hour. Besides the ever popular honey and bee beard demonstrations, (seriously these things alone are worth seeing!) the event will be family friendly with crafts and games for kids, and drink samples and cooking demos and vendors for adults.

Glen Foerd’s exclusive caterer, Jamie Hollander Catering and Events, will be providing cooking demonstrations and  desserts featuring honey from the Philadelphia Bee Keeper’s Guild.  If you want to test out your honey infused baking skills we pulled this recipe from Glen Foerd’s archive collection.  This recipe from 1962 was used by Glen Foerd’s owner, Florence Foerderer Tonner.  The German cookie recipe, Lebkuchen, references the Foerderer Family’s German ancestry and calls for one full cup of everyone’s favorite ingredient- HONEY!  Enjoy!


1 cup honey

1/4 cup dark molasses

1/8 cup brown sugar

1 egg

4 1/2 cups sifted flour

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon cloves

2 tablespoons grated orange peel

2 tablespoons grated citron peel

1 cup candied orange relish

1 cup blanched almonds

1 teaspoon Baking Soda  in hot water


1.Mix honey, molasses, spices, fruit peel, fruit relish and almonds

2. Add baking soda in boiling water  & egg to the mixture

3. Mix in flour, blend into a thick dough

4. Place in refrigerator

Soften up, when ready to bake.  Roll out into 1/2″ in thickness

(The recipe ends here (dun, dun, dun!)… but we’re guessing based on similar recipes- bake at 350 degrees, until golden brown- about 10-12 minutes)
